TAKING FLIGHT

Right: Key West International Airport opened the doors to its new Concourse A on Monday, April 14, and Delta Airlines passengers were the first to board using the facility’s new glass passenger boarding bridges. The new concourse features 446 panels of electrochromic glass, a type of smart-glass technology that can switch between transparent and opaque in response to an applied voltage. When an electric current is applied to the coating, ions within the coating change, causing the glass to darken when struck with direct sunlight. The strategically placed dots on the glass are designed to deter birds from striking the glass, which is rated for hurricane force winds up to 200 mph.
