Shaw Drive

Twin Lake’s Shaw Drive is inundated with floodwaters in this file photo. The county has undertaken a road and drainage pilot project in this Key Largo neighborhood.

Twin Lakes property owners are likely to see a $2,131 assessment this fall on their annual tax bills to operate and maintain a road and drainage project under construction in their flood-prone Key Largo neighborhood, but the prospect of an additional assessment to help cover construction costs was roundly rejected by the county’s elected leaders.

The Monroe County Commission on Wednesday, May 21, voted 5-0 to move forward with the O&M assessment for the road adaption pilot project in Twin Lakes, which was a cost anticipated by the neighborhood, before jettisoning a proposal by staff to also charge an additional capital assessment of $25,000 per billing unit.
